How To Tell If A Superhero Movie Is Appropriate For Your Child

For probably the last ten years, some of the biggest silver screen hits have been superhero movies. After all, these types of movies have a little bit of everything: romance, comedy, drama, superpowers, interesting backstories, the list can go on. But there is a particular elephant in the room that has to be addressed at some point by all parents, and that is whether a superhero movie is appropriate for your child. This can be a bit of a thorny issue.

In some instances, you understand that many of the lead characters in these movies are based off comic book heroes, the ultimate in kid-friendly periodicals. However, many superhero movies tend to tackle fairly serious subject matter. Think in terms of the conversations you have had, or will have, with your child such about heavy topics like death and “the birds & the bees”. As much as the superhero genre has to offer for the entire family, your child may not quite be ready for these types of films.

You also have to contend with the marketing of these films in terms of collectibles. Well, it may be better said that adults see collectible items, but kids see cool toys that can’t help but want. You struggle with the desire of your kids to have the coolest toys, as well as t-shirts and other branded products. How do you make the call to allow these items to be a part of your child’s life while still being unsure of the merit the films have for them?

In the end, you need to keep in mind that as a parent, you are not alone, and you actually have a number of resources at your disposal. Not only do all films carry a ratings system that provides guidelines for an appropriate viewing age, but there are organizations online that provide lists of films appropriate for all ages.

It may also mean redefining the notion of what superhero movies are & what messages we’d like to convey to our kids. Superheroes come in different shapes & sizes, and in the end, the most grown-up decision about superheroes is helping define what a hero is for our kids.
